PHILADELPHIA - Lauren Currey's goal off a throw in late in the second overtime gave Drexel a 1-0 win on Sunday at Vidas Field. It was the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.
The Dragons broke the scoreless tie in the 106th minute. Delaney Lappin fired a throw in over a pair of Towson players. Currey coralled the pass and took aim at the far corner. She deposited the shot into the net for her first goal of the season as the Dragons evened their record at 2-2. Towson is now 1-2-2.
Playing without a number of its regulars, the Dragons held the edge in the first half, outshooting the visitors, 8-5. Currey had one of the team's best scoring chances in the first half. She fired a shot from the top of the box towards the lower left corner with 11 minutes left in the half. Towson keeper Riley Melendez made a sprawling save to keep it scoreless. Five minutes later, freshman Klara Gorges had two chance right in the box, but both were blocked by the Towson defense.
Towson came out strong in the second half and had the majority of the scoring opportunities. The Tigers had the first seven shots of the second half, but the Dragons were able to keep the visitors off the board. Molly Piso, who started the second half in goal, had five saves, some of the spectacular variety. She stopped Towson's Phoebe Canoles on a penalty kick with 22 minutes to play. Piso dove to her left and knocked the ball away. In the overtime period, Piso got a hand on a shot that went off the crossbar on a free kick. The Tigers had a chance on the rebound but again hit the crossbar, the third time in the game they did that.
Miyuki Schoyen made three saves without allowing a goal in the first half for DU. Melendez made five stops in a losing cause for Towson. Towson ended the game outshooting the Dragons, 20-15.
Drexel will visit Temple on Wednesday before returning home to play Delaware State on Sunday.
