Dragons Close Non-Conference Schedule With a Win Against Delaware State

PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Delaney Lappin had Drexel's first hat trick since 2008 as the Dragons ended their non-conference schedule with a 10-1 victory against Delaware State on Sunday afternoon at Vidas Field. Fellow freshman Klara Gorges added a pair of goals and an assist as Drexel improved to 3-2 this season.
Lappin recorded just the third hat trick in Drexel history. She joined Laura Meikle and Aleka Yiantsos as Dragons that have scored three times in a game.
The Dragons got on the board early against the Hornets. Annalena O'Reilly was in on the left side and sent a pass into the center of the box to a streaking Gorges. She put a low shot just inside the left post for her first career goal to give the Dragons the advantage just six minutes in. Lappin had her first of the game when Kylie Kutz found her on the left side . She deposited a shot low into the far corner. Kailey Horton added a third Drexel goal with three minutes to go in the opening stanza. Sydney DeNofrio was credited with an assist on the play.
The offense exploded for seven goals in the second half, six of them coming in the first 18 minutes of the second half. Freshman Anna Salvucci started the run just 89 seconds in after converting a Gorges pass. Isabel Kuzy made it 5-0 less than two minutes later. Gorges found the net for the second time by racing past the defense and catching up to a long feed from the back by Kylie Kutz. Lappin added two more goals before Raenah Campbell made it 9-0. The Hornets (0-6) scored on a Jade Lee goal in the 77th minute to snap the shutout bid. Drexel added one more in the 89th minute. Shannon Riordan, who started the day in goal for the Dragons and got the win, scored on a penalty kick.
Drexel outshot Delaware State 21-8. Riordan made one save in 65 minutes. Isabel Kuzy, who had a goal earlier in the game, finished up the day in goal and made three saves. Gabrielle Perrotto, Kylie Kutz and Annalena O'Reilly each had two assists.
Drexel will host Hofstra on Thursday afternoon at Vidas Field at 2 p.m. It will be the Dragons final home game of the season.
