Softball Splits Doubleheader at Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA- The Drexel softball team (7-1) split a doubleheader against Saint Joseph's (10-6) on Thursday afternoon. The Dragons took the first game, 7-2, but dropped the second game, 6-2. Linda Rush went 5-for-7 with two home runs and four RBIs in the effort.
GAME ONE
Lindsay Nelson (3-0) was on the rubber for Drexel in game one. She threw the complete seven innings and held Saint Joseph's to three runs on 10 hits.
Taylor Kent went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in game one. Kent also stole a bag and scored a run for the Dragons.
Rush continued to hit the ball well. The graduate student went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.
Elena Woulfe hit the first triple of her career. The senior finished game one hitting 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Kent led off for the Dragons and ripped a double down the left field line. With Kent on second, Sarah Clinton drew a walk to set up an ample scoring opportunity for the Dragons. Rush homered to straight-away center scoring three runs. The home run was Rush's seventh of the season.
In the second inning, the Dragons scored two insurance runs to make it a 5-0 game. Woulfe hit an RBI triple down the right field line and then was brought in by Kent, who grounded out.
The Dragons were quiet in the third and fourth innings but tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Kristi DiMeo put the ball in play by grounding out to second base. The hit brought in a run and moved another runner to third. Megan Trivelpiece then brought home the runner with a single to right field.
In the bottom of the fifth, Saint Joseph's scored its first run. Sarah Ostaszewski hit a double to score Kirstin Cox to put the Hawks' first run on the board.
The Hawks then made a last-minute push for the game as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Payton Baxter hit a double to left field scoring two runners and making the score 7-3.
Nelson retired the next batter to finish the game and end the Hawks' rally.
GAME TWO
Brooklyn Daly (2-1) was the pitcher for game two. The senior pitched 4.2 innings and had three earned runs.
Meghan Conroy pitched 1.1 innings and did not allow a hit through five batters.
Rush went 3-for-3 with a home run in game two of the doubleheader. The Pittsburgh native now has eight home runs in eight games this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons scored both of their runs in the top of the third in back-to-back fashion. Rush hit her home run to centerfield, and DiMeo followed her up with a home run to left field.
Saint Joseph's scored three runs in the bottom of the third. A double by Ostaszewski scored one run. Following her, Molly Kapala singled up the middle to tie the score up at two apiece. The tie would not stand for long. The Hawks scored one more on a ground out to Savaanah Garcia at second.
In the bottom of the fourth, Cox gave the Hawks an insurance run by singling to right field.
Madison Fife was responsible for the final two runs of the game. In the bottom of the fifth, Fife hit a double to left-center that plated two and gave Saint Joseph's the lead of 6-2.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons are scheduled to have a weekend series against La Salle. The Dragons and the Explorers will play the first doubleheader at the Drexel Softball Field on Saturday, March 27 at 11 a.m., and the second doubleheader at La Salle on Sunday, March 28 at noon.
