PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team (18-6) defeated the Penn Quakers (5-5), 11-2, in a single game on Wednesday afternoon. The Dragons pieced together three multi-run innings in the effort.
Meghan Conroy (5-0) earned the start for the Dragons and threw a complete game. The junior allowed two runs on three hits and struck three batters out.
Linda Rush went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored, four RBIs, a double and a home run. The round-tripper was Rush's fifth grand slam of her career.
Reilly Jo Swanson also had a great day at the plate. The senior went 2-for-3 with three RBI's and a run scored. Swanson hit a double in the fifth inning to help put the game out of reach.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel's scoring barrage started in the first inning. Back-to-back doubles by Rush and DiMeo allowed the Dragons to strike first. Swanson extended the lead by hitting an RBI single to left field. Moving to third on the play was Megan Trivelpiece. The final run was scored when Holly Bridgman singled to right field. After the top of the first, the Dragons had a 3-0 lead.
Drexel tacked on six runs in the third inning. Bridgman singled to second base and the Dragons capitalized on a miscue by the second basemen to score the first run. Drexel scored another run a few batters later after Elena Woulfe drew a walk with the bases loaded. Immediately following the walk, Linda Rush cleared the bases with a grand slam. The home run is Rush's 12th of the season.
The Quakers added a run in the bottom of the third inning to trim the deficit to eight runs.
Swanson hit a double to left-center in the top of the fifth inning and scored two runs to push the lead to take an 11-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Penn scored a run in the form of a home run to cut the lead to nine.
With the Dragons up nine runs after five innings, the game ended.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons will return to the Drexel Softball Field to host the Morgan State Bears in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 22. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
