Men's Lacrosse Battles Notre Dame on Saturday in NCAA Championships

DENVER, Colo. - The Drexel men's lacrosse team will face Notre Dame on Saturday in the opening round of the 2021 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships. The Dragons and the sixth-seeded Fighting Irish will play at 5 p.m. EST in a game that can be seen live on ESPNU.
Drexel enters the game with a 10-2 record. Brian Voelker's team has won nine-straight games, which ties the school record for consecutive victories. The Dragons won their final seven regular-season games before defeating both UMass and Hofstra in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships. The Dragons won the title with a 15-11 victory at Hofstra on May 8. Reid Bowering was named the CAA Championship Most Outstanding Player.
Drexel has had a balanced offense all season. Freshman Sean Donnelly leads the team with 19 assists and 44 points. He has scored 25 goals, which is second on the team behind Aidan Coll's 32. Despite missing four games with injury, Bowering has scored 21 goals, including five in the title game against Hofstra. He now has 143 in his career at the school. Ryan Genord has 19 goals and 31 points in just 10 games, while Jack Mulcahy has scored 18 times and handed out 10 assists. Jimmeh Koita set the Drexel record in career face-off wins and is winning more than 50 percent of his draws this year. Goalkeeper Ross Blumenthal had a big game against Hofstra and his save percentage is now at .486. Drexel's defense has been a key all year. Sean Quinn was a First Team All-CAA performer. Brennan Greenwald, Patrick Udicious and long-pole Jack Farrell performed well all seasons. Short-stick defenders including Luke Hurley, George Grippo and Brent McVicker have been a big factor in Drexel's transition offense as well.
The Dragons have a tough match-up as Notre Dame enters the contest ranked fourth in the country with a 7-3 record. Notre Dame's only losses have come to Virginia, Duke and North Carolina. Pat Kavanagh is one of the finalists for the Tewaaraton Award which is presented to the best player in the nation. He has 23 goals, 36 assists and 59 points. Will Yorke has 22 goals for the Irish, while Griffin Westlin, Wheaton Jackoboice, Quinn McMahon and Eric Dobson each have at least 20 points. Kyle Gallagher faces off at better than 62 percent, while Liam Entenmann has a .580 save percentage.
The winner of Saturday's game will move on to the NCAA Quarterfinals to face the winner of the Maryland-Vermont game on Sunday, May 23.
