PHILADELPHIA – The Dragons came out strong in Sunday's matchup with Temple University but came up just short, 3-2. Despite a late fourth quarter goal by senior Emily Owens, the Owls three unanswered points in the second and third quarters sealed their fate.
After a tough 1-0 loss to Longwood on Friday, the Dragons entered Sunday's game eager to find the back of the net first. The Dragons stormed the Owls circle right off the bat, finding a smooth connection from Eline Di Leva to Hannah Nihill for a 1-0 advantage only 40 seconds into the game.
Drexel looked for multiple opportunities throughout the second and third quarters to add to Nihill's early lead but were faced with a heightened Temple defensive effort. The Owls opened up the second quarter with a 1v1 goal by Kerrie Lorenz and quickly followed suit with a successful penalty corner three minutes later. The Dragons outshot the Owls, 6-5, in the second and third quarters but struggled to put an end to their momentum.
Not willing to give up, Drexel's offense made some timely transitions into Temple's zone and forced a penalty corner in the 52nd minute. Amber Brouwer inserted the ball to Puk Thewessen who drove a hard ball on net and found a redirect off the stick of Emily Owens, moving the Dragons back within one.
The Dragons offense forced another corner opportunity in the final minute and tried to tie up the game, but Thewessen's attempt couldn't find a hole.
With the loss, the Dragons fall to 0-2 . They will head to Saint Joseph's this Friday, Sept. 3 for their first road game of the year.
