Dragons Net Three in Tight Race With Penn
9/10/2021 5:52:00 PM | Field Hockey
Penn produced an early lead behind a two-goal first quarter and was able to hold on to the lead into the second half. Puk Thewessen led the Drexel offensive charge in the third quarter, netting her second goal of the season on the sixth penalty corner of the day. Thewessen saw help from Liz Chipman and Stephanie Oleykowski, both of whom picked up their first points of the year.
The Quakers answered back shortly after to open the gap to 4-1 but the Dragons offense continued to power through. Despite a fifth goal from Penn in the 50th minute, Drexel's staunch effort to force corner opportunities worked in their advantage. With an assist under her belt, Chipman fired into the circle for the Dragons second goal of the day with assists from Oleykowski and Avery Powell to make the score 5-2. As the time wound down, Powell added a goal of her own with eight seconds remaining to move the Dragons to three but their late offensive momentum was cut short by the clock.
Drexel outshot Penn 17-13 behind a game-high four shots from Thewessen.
The Dragons are back in action on home turf this Sunday as they welcome No. 4 UNC to Buckley Field for a 12 p.m. contest.
