PHILADELPHIA – A three-goal first quarter helped the Dragons to their second win over Rider University on Sunday afternoon, 4-3. Drexel's offense caught fire early, sinking three goals in the first five minutes to take a healthy lead over the Broncs. The Dragons improve to 2-6 while giving Rider only its second loss of the year.
Drexel saw several firsts in Sunday's victory, as four different Dragons recorded their first goals of the year. Avery Powell kicked things off for DU on the opening drive, netting a pass from Isabel Jacobs on a corner opportunity only 27 seconds into the game. The Dragons offense continued to push the boundaries early and didn't waste any time before recording their second goal of the day. Eline Di Leva got the credit for the score after commanding the Broncs defensive zone less than a minute later.
Freshman Tina Rawa built off the momentum of the two veterans in the fourth minute and recorded her first collegiate goal to give Drexel the 3-0 advantage.
Despite two goals by the Broncs in the second and third quarters, the Dragons continued to fire on all cylinders, forcing six more shots in the fourth quarter alone. With only three minutes remaining, Cailey Lever gave Drexel the insurance goal it needed on an assist from Di Leva. Lever's goal proved even more valuable as the Broncs sank a third goal in the final minute, but the Dragons defense was able to hold on long enough to secure the victory.
Drexel outshot Rider 21-13 while forcing a season-high 11 penalty corners for the second time this year. The Dragons four goals also marks a season-high through eight games.
DU will host its fourth consecutive home matchup on Friday, Sept. 24 as the Dragons welcome Fairfield University to Buckley Field for a 4 p.m. contest.
