PHILADELPHIA – The Dragons offense scored early and often on the way to their second consecutive win, downing Fairfield University 5-1 on Friday afternoon. Drexel's three-goal first half coupled with a dominant defensive effort helped the Dragons improve to 3-6 on the year.
Avery Powell started the scoring frenzy for DU with her fourth goal of the season just 1:38 into the game with an assist from Eline Di Leva. The Dragons following two goals came on their only two penalty corner opportunities in the first half. Liz Chipman grabbed a dual pass from Amber Brouwer and Stephanie Oleykowski for the Dragons second goal of the day. Brouwer then added to her effort with a goal of her own at 26:19 with an assist from Powell and Isabel Jacobs.
Di Leva and Powell continued to find success in the circle in the second half, giving DU a healthy 4-0 advantage 30 seconds in. Powell drove into the zone and found Di Leva on the left post for her first of the day.
Despite an immediate response from Fairfield, the Dragons continued to push back, holding the Stags to only one goal on seven corners faced in the third quarter alone. Di Leva sealed the deal for Drexel in the fourth quarter with her second goal of the day off a one vs one opportunity with the Fairfield goalkeeper.
Powell and Di Leva drove the Dragons offense against the Stags with nine total points between them. Megan Hadfield was lights out in net for DU, recording 11 saves on 25 total shots and 12 penalty corners.
The Dragons are back in action on Sunday as they head to New Haven, Conn. to face Yale at 2 p.m.
