Overtime Heroics Moves Drexel Past La Salle

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel field hockey picked up its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon in a 3-2 overtime battle with La Salle University. The Dragons came back from a 2-1 deficit with seven seconds left in the fourth quarter to secure a victory in the 66th minute. With the win, Drexel moves to 1-3 on the season and La Salle drops to an even 2-2.
Both teams battled for points in the first quarter but came up empty, with the Dragons outshooting the Explorers 10-1. Drexel's offense finally found its groove in the 24th minute as they approached their second penalty corner opportunity. A strong one, two punch from Amber Brouwer and Isabel Jacobs set the stage for Puk Thewessen to net the Dragons first goal of the day and her first goal of the season.
The Explorers added a pair of goals in the third and fourth quarter to take the lead 2-1. With the clock winding down, Drexel's offense was able to force a final penalty corner with seven seconds remaining in the game. Brouwer redirected the initial shot to the right side of the goal where she found Hannah Nihill who was positioned perfectly to tie the game 2-2.
Jacobs provided the heroics the Dragons needed to secure their first win of the year with a rocket from the top of the key six minutes into the first overtime period. Drexel closed out the day with 30 total shots, 19 of which landed on goal. Goalie Megan Hadfield recorded seven saves and picked up her first victory in net.
The Dragons head back on the road this Friday, September 10 for a 3 p.m. matchup with UPenn.
