Opening Tip
The Drexel University women's basketball continues its four-game homestand with a Colonial Athletic Association contest against the Hofstra Pride. Tipoff from the Daskalakis Athletic Center is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
About Drexel
Drexel forced clutch turnovers late and converted on 19-of-21 at the free throw line as the Dragons improved to 11-2 overall with a 63-50 win against the Northeastern Huskies on Friday night.
The Dragons continue to build off the success of their CAA Championship last year, putting together the best start in program history at 11-2. The 2016-17 team was 10-2 before falling in its 13th contest of the season.
Tessa Brugler has made quite the impact opening her only year with the Dragons. Her 19 point, 10 rebound effort against Northeastern on Friday was her fourth consecutive double-double and her eighth this year overall. To put that in perspective, Drexel had three double-doubles in 2019-20 and 2020-21 combined. She is second in the conference in rebounding at 9.8 boards per game and is 10th in scoring, dropping 13.9 a night. Her eight double-doubles this season rank 14th nationally.
Drexel holds the fifth-longest current win streak in NCAA Division I, claiming victories in its last eight games. Only Louisville (14), Liberty (12), South Dakota (11), and Old Dominion (9) have won more games in a row.
Scouting Hofstra
Hofstra enters the game 3-7 on the season with an 0-2 mark in the CAA and is coming off a 73-38 loss against the Delaware Blue Hens on Friday night. The Pride returned to action on January 9 after being off since a December 11 game against Ole Miss.
Offensively, Hofstra is led by Preseason Second Team All-CAA pick JaKayla Brown who nets 13.0 per game. Jaylen Hines is also in double figures at 10.9 points a contest and leads the team with 6.3 rebounds an outing. Jaala Henry tops the Pride with 20 assists.
Beyond Brown and Hines, offense has been hard to come by for Hofstra, which averages 48.6 points per game, the lowest mark in the CAA. Part of the struggle for the Pride is the deep ball, hitting just 22.5 percent of its three pointers, ninth in the conference and 342nd out of 348 teams in Division I.
Defensively, Hofstra is in the top half of the conference, holding opponents to 61.4 points a game. Contributing to that is limiting possessions as the Pride averages 9.3 steals per game with Henry, Rosi Nicholson, and Sorelle Ineza all with 11 or more swipes this year.
Danielle Santos Atkinson is in her third season at the helm of Hofstra with a record of 14-46. While this is her first head coaching position, she is far from new to the bench with 14 years as an associate head coach or assistant with stops including Pitt, Kentucky, Illinois State, and Florida State where she helped guide the Seminoles to a pair of Elite Eight appearances and a berth in the Sweet 16.
All-Time Series
Despite not playing each other a season ago, Sunday marks the 76th all-time matchup between Drexel and Hofstra, the most times the Dragons have played any opponent other than Delaware. Drexel holds a 45-30 series lead and has won six in a row. The last game between the two was a defensive battle on February 7, 2020, a 45-32 win for DU. Mariah Leonard led the Dragons with 10 points, connecting on 5-of-7 shots from the floor.
