Opening Tip
The Drexel University women's basketball team plays for the third time in five days and has a big Colonial Athletic Association showdown against the Towson Tigers on Tuesday, January 18. The game is a makeup from December 31. Tipoff from the Daskalakis Athletic Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
About Drexel
The Dragons outscored the Hofstra Pride 19-4 in the second quarter as Drexel won its ninth consecutive game with a 72-53 victory on Sunday afternoon.
The win against Hofstra was the ninth in a row overall for the Dragons, tying them with Iowa State and Indiana for the third longest winning streak in Division I. Only No. 2 Louisville (15) and South Dakota (12) have longer spans without a loss. It was also the seventh consecutive victory against the Pride, a stretch that dates back to February 26, 2017.
Defending the three-point shot could be a difference maker in Tuesday's game. Drexel leads the CAA and is seventh nationally in three-point percentage defense at 24.1 percent. On the flip side, Towson is second in the conference in hitting their treys at 32.1 percent. Reversing the script, The Dragons are 30.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc while Towson is eighth of 10 teams in the CAA in distance from deep, giving up 33.3 percent.
With her start against Hofstra on Sunday, Hannah Nihill moved all alone into second place on the Drexel games played list, passing Fiona Flanagan with her 133rd career appearance. With 14 regular season games left (including Tuesday), she can break the Dragons' career record of 142 appearances, currently held by Meghan Creighton. With those games and at least one contest in the CAA tournament, the conference record for games played is also on her radar as, based on available information, Nikki Newman played in the most games while in the conference, appearing 147 times for James Madison from 2009-14.
Scouting Towson
Towson enters play 12-2 overall and is 3-0 in the CAA following a 79-70 win against James Madison on Sunday. Reigning Conference Player of the Week, Allie Kubek led the Tigers with a career-high 28 points against the Dukes.
Kubek is one of three players scoring in double figures for Towson, netting 16.4 points per game and has scored 10 or more in 13 of 14 contests. Aleah Nelson also tallies 16.4 a night while Anissa Rivera is posting 13.3. Rivera tops the team in rebounding at 7.4 an outing while Nelson has 87 assists on the year.
There isn't much Towson doesn't do well as it is in the top-three in the CAA in scoring (77.7 - 2nd), scoring defense (59.8 - 3rd), rebounding (44.8 - 1st), three-point percentage (32.1 - 2nd), and turnover margin (3.79 - 3rd). They have also not been afraid to challenge themselves, taking on three teams in the top 85 of the NET ratings, falling to NC State and Princeton, but beating Florida.
Weaknesses are hard to come by, but despite the solid turnover margin, the Tigers are susceptible to coughing the ball up, committing 15.1 turnovers per game. They are also eighth in the conference and 290th out of 348 teams in Division I in three-point percentage defense at 33.3 percent.
Diane Richardson is in her fifth season at the helm of the Tigers with a record of 68-60. After going 9-21 in her first year, Towson went 20-13 in 2018-19 and captured the CAA tournament title.
All-Time Series
Tuesday is the 83rd all-time meeting between the Dragons and Tigers with Drexel holding a 60-22 series lead. A large part of building that advantage came from February 28, 2010 through February 25, 2018 when DU won 19 games in a row against Towson. The Tigers have come back a bit, winning three of the last seven including a 77-62 victory at SECU Arena in the last matchup on February 21, 2021.
