The Dragons saved a penalty kick in the 66th minute. and one minute later, the Dragons scored to take a 1-0 edge. The Dragons now prepare to face the top-seeded Elon Phoenix on Sunday, Nov. 6.
Drexel outshot the Huskies 15-13 and had a better shot on goal percentage than Northeastern. Drexel placed eight shots on target, while Northeastern could only place five on net.
Alessandro Capogna continues to shine in net for the Dragons, completing his sixth shutout of the 2022 campaign. The GK did his part in goal for the Dragons as he stopped yet another penalty kick. Drexel's victory is the program's first since the team won the conference title in 2013.
SCOUTING REPORT
The Phoenix are led by Mason Duval who, after 15 matches, has 14 points on seven goals. Slightly behind Duval is Scott Vatne with 12 points and Vemund Hole Vik with 10. The Phoenix are coached by Marc Reeves in his 13th season. The Phoenix are 10-3-3 with a 6-1-2 tab in conference play.
All-Time Series
The all-time series between the Phoenix and Dragons is still relatively new. The two teams first met in 2014 and the Phoenix have been victorious in five of the eight matches. The last victory for Drexel came in the 2019 season. In 2021, the two teams tied in the regular season.
Last Time Against The Huskies
The Drexel men's soccer team was defeated by the Elon Phoenix, 3-0, on Saturday night in Elon, N.C.
Elon scored a goal in the first half and then added a pair of goals in the second half to push the Phoenix ahead. Drexel took nine shots throughout the night, two of which were on target.
A Different Look
Despite losing most of the team's offense after the 2021 season, the Dragons have found other avenues to score. Drexel is currently second in the CAA in shots, points and goals.
A Season To Remember
Drexel's front line is constantly shifting and changing, seeing a number of different Dragons in the striker role. In the match against Charleston on September 24, Harrison Coron took charge and carried the offense. Coron tied the conference record for single-game points and also single-game goals. Despite only playing for 54 minutes, Coron found the back of the net on four of his five shots. Coron's five goals this season more than double his single-season goal total, which was previously two goals.
Finishing On A Positive Note
Before head coach Michael Marchiano's arrival to University City, the Dragons had a 26-57-12 record since the 2013 season (the last time there was postseason play). Since the addition of Coach Marchiano, the Dragons have a 21-15-9 record and have clinched a postseason berth for three-straight seasons. It is the first time since joining the CAA in 2002 that the Dragons have achieved postseason play three straight times.
Big Saves Save Games
The Dragons have put their trust in Italian newcomer, Alessandro Capogna, to assume goal duties all season long. Capogna has been in net for all minutes played for Drexel this year. The last time a Dragon keeper did this was in 2017. Jacob Jordan commanded the Drexel XI for all 18 games played that season. Capogna's 1.06 goals against average and .763 save percentage have kept Drexel in many matches this season. One of the most important stats is Capogna's save percentage against penalty kicks. Opponents have been given four chances from the strike, and only one found its way past the Dragons' keeper.
Living Up to History
It is no secret that Drexel has had its share of great coaches in its 76 years. Head coach Mike Marchiano has put his name among the rest of Drexel's Head Coaches. After three seasons at the helm of Drexel men's soccer, Marchiano has the highest win percentage among the rest of the head coaches in their first three years. In addition, there has only been one coach in Drexel's history to send their team to the conference playoffs in their first three years, and it was Doug Hess in 2012. No coach before Marchiano has sent their team to three consecutive postseason tournaments in their first three years.
Michael Marchiano: 21-15-9 (56.6%)
Lou Meehl: 29-22-5 (56.3%)
Doug Hess: 24-24-7 (50%)
Don Yonker: 11-11-3 (50%)
Johnson Bowie: 18-23-2 (44%)
