About Drexel
Trailing by 24 with less than three minutes left in the third quarter, the Dragons came all the way back to tie the score, but fell 74-73 to the Charleston Cougars on Sunday afternoon. Tessa Brugler led all scorers with a career-high 28 points and pulled in 12 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the year. She scored 25 of her points in the second half including 18 in the fourth quarter alone. Keishana Washington posted 20 in the game, continuing her string of reaching double figures in every game this season.
The end of the streak didn't hurt the Dragons in the national polls, however, as Drexel improved to four points in the WBCA top 25 poll and received a vote in the AP rankings. DU came in at No. 14 in the latest Mid Major Top 25, the highest ranked of the four CAA schools that were recognized. Delaware is No. 21, Towson is No. 22, and James Madison is receiving votes.
With her start against UNCW, Mariah Leonard made her 100th appearance in a Drexel uniform. She is one of three players on the roster who have played in 100 or more games for the Dragons. In addition to Hannah Nihill (139 games), Washington recently hit the century mark, completing the task at Elon and now has played in 103 games. The next closest on the list is Maura Hendrixson who has stepped on the court 85 times as a Dragon.
With a 11-for-12 performance at the line against Charleston, Drexel continued its improvement in free throws since the turn of the new year. In 10 conference games, DU is connecting at a 80.4 percent clip (123-for-153), an eight percent increase over the first 10 games of the year. At home in CAA competition, the Dragons are 73-for-85 at the stripe, an 85.6 percent mark. The number of attempts is also increasing with Drexel taking 15.3 free throws per game in conference play compared to 10.5 in non-conference action.
Scouting Hofstra
Hofstra enters the game 5-12 on the season with a 2-7 mark in the CAA. The Pride has won two in a row, both by double figures, taking down UNCW on February 1 and Northeastern on Sunday.
Offensively, Hofstra is led by Jaylen Hines who is scoring 12.6 points per game overall and has upped her output in conference play, tallying 14.0 per outing. She also leads the team in rebounding at 7.3 boards a contest. Jaala Henry tops the Pride with 30 assists.
Hofstra is a defensive-minded team, ranking in the top half of the CAA in points per game allowed (61.1) and doesn't put teams at the line, committing the second fewest fouls in the conference. It also comes away with its share of steals, ranking third in the CAA and within the top 100 nationally at 8.9 swipes per game.
Rebounding has been a concern for the Pride, which ranks in the bottom 30 in the country with 32.9 boards an outing. It is also in the bottom 50 in rebounding margin.
Danielle Santos Atkinson is in her third season at the helm of Hofstra with a record of 16-51. While this is her first head coaching position, she is far from new to the bench with 14 years as an associate head coach or assistant with stops including Pitt, Kentucky, Illinois State, and Florida State where she helped guide the Seminoles to a pair of Elite Eight appearances and a berth in the Sweet 16.
All-Time Series
After not playing a season ago, Drexel and Hofstra meet for the second time in 26 days when they renew their rivalry on Friday. The game marks the 77th all-time matchup between the Dragons and the Pride, the most times DU has played any opponent other than Delaware. Drexel holds a 46-30 series lead and has won seven in a row. In the last matchup, the Dragons were able to get every available player into the contest as part of a 72-53 win.
Up Next
Drexel makes the trip up I-95 to Boston, taking on Northeastern on Sunday, February 13. Tipoff from the Cabot Center is scheduled for noon.
