Dragons Downed by FIU on Final Day of Invitational

MIAMI Fla. – The Drexel softball team was defeated on Sunday by the FIU Panthers, 6-5, on the final day of the FIU Invitational.
Despite late-game heroics by freshman Jackie Masone in the top of the seventh, the Panthers scored in the bottom of the frame to walk off against Drexel.
Jessica Schable got the start for Drexel on the third-straight day of play. The junior went three innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Meghan Conroy entered the game in middle relief and went 2.2 innings. The third to pitch in the game was Lindsay Nelson (0-2), tossing two-thirds of an inning.
Ashley Errico went 1-for-3 with a home run, the first of the season for the sophomore. Errico was also responsible for two runs also drew a walk.
Masone went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, two runs scored and two walks. The East Windsor, N.J. native was responsible for the two-out double that scored two runs and tied the game at five in the top of the seventh inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel struck first in the top of the second innings. With runners on first and third, Grace Abbonizio hit an RBI single to left field to give Drexel a quick 1-0 lead.
Venessa Gallegos was on the verge of being retired in the bottom of the third but found a way to turn an 0-2 count into a single to left field. With the run, the Panthers tied the game at one.
FIU took advantage of a first and third situation to score its second run in the bottom of the fourth. The runner on first took off for second, and the Dragons elected to throw down to third to see if they could catch the other runner. On the throw, FIU stole home and scored the team's second run.
In the top of the sixth inning, Drexel scored two runs. Errico led the inning off with a solo home run to left-center on a 1-1 count. A few batters later, with runners on second and third, Madison Gayle singled to left field, driving in Alana Backstrom from third.
FIU tacked on three runs in the bottom of the sixth. A single with the bases loaded scored two runs, and a few batters later, FIU scored one more run on an infield single. At the end of the sixth, FIU led 5-3.
Drexel did not go away quietly. Masone hit a two-out double to left-center to score two runs and tie the game at five. But in the bottom half of the frame, FIU scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
WHAT'S NEXT
Drexel will travel to Hampton, Va., to participate in the annual Pirate Invitational. The three-day invitational, hosted by the recently added Hampton, will kick off on Friday, March 4.
