DETROIT, Mich. – Mickey O'Malley put up a dominant performance in day two of the NCAA Tournament, coming within a single win of All-American status. In his third appearance on the national stage, O'Malley battled to a career-best top-12 finish, advancing to the fourth round of consolation behind a 3-2 record.
The Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. native closed out the year with an impressive 25-4 record, surpassing his 50th career win. O'Malley's two pins in the tournament helped him mark his place in the Drexel record book as the single season falls leader with 13. With 31 career falls, he also ties Tim Rothka (1986-91) for the Drexel career falls record.
After battling to a 1-1 record in the opening day, the redshirt-junior powered through his first two opponents on Friday. O'Malley met #26 Tyler Eischens from Stanford in the second round of consolation and forced his first pin of the day in the opening period.
He followed suit with a lights-out performance against #18 Lance Runyon (UNI) in the third round. O'Malley recorded six near fall points in the first period, setting the stage for another pin thirty seconds into the second. His victory in the third consolation round marked his best outing in the NCAA Championships yet, giving him an opportunity to compete for the coveted All-American status.
#5 Michael Kemerer was O'Malley's first opponent ranked higher than him in the bracket, setting the stage for a tough matchup. The redshirt junior fought early but a pair of takedowns by Kemerer sealed the deal on a 5-2 decision, ending his time in the tournament.
