PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Megan Trivelpiece capped off Drexel's come-from-behind victory with a walk-off walk against Stony Brook on Saturday at the Rutgers Softball Tournament. The Dragons (8-5) scored three runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Seawolves (10-8), 5-4.
Brooklyn Daly (5-2) threw over 123 pitches in the complete-game win for Drexel. The graduate student held Stony Brook to five hits and struck two batters out.
Trivelpiece went 1-for-3 with a single and, most importantly, the walk-off walk in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was Trivelpiece's sixth free trip of the season.
Kristi DiMeo went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the third inning. DiMeo has now pushed her hitting streak to nine games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons were the first to score in the game, and it did not happen until the third inning of the game. Maddie Kapsimalis earned a double with a hit off the left-center wall. Grace Abbonizio pushed Kapsimalis to third after a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Jackie Masone drew a walk and brought up DiMeo. The graduate student dropped a single into shallow center to score Drexel's first run of the game.
Stony Brook hit a two-run home run to right field in the following inning. The round-tripper gave the Seawolves a 2-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, Ashley Errico led off for Drexel and only needed one look at a pitch. The sophomore crushed a ball to left to notch her fifth home run of the season.
Stony Brook tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh with a single up the middle. At the end of the top of the seventh, the Seawolves had a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the frame, Kapsimalis drew a walk, and Sarah Clinton reached on an error to put runners on first and second for Masone. The freshman, with a full count, drew a walk for DiMeo. On the third pitch of the bat, the ball got away from the catcher and scored Kapsimalis from third. DiMeo drew a walk to load the bases for Errico. The sophomore hit a fly ball to shallow left field. With the shortstop ranging back and the left fielder coming in, the ball was bobbled and dropped, scoring one run and tying the game at four. Stony Brook elected to change pitchers with Trivelpiece at-bat. After fouling the first pitch off, the Dragons left fielder watched four-straight balls to score the game-winning run.
