Opening Tip
The Drexel University women's basketball team plays its final regular season game, with a key matchup in terms of NET rating, traveling to Towson on Saturday, March 5, 2022. Tipoff from SECU Arena is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
About Drexel
With its 80-60 win at James Madison on Thursday, Drexel secured the top spot in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship. At 16-1 in conference the Dragons lead Delaware by a game in the CAA standings, but hold the tiebreker by sweeping the season series against the Blue Hens. With six of the nine seeds in the tournament locked, Drexel will play its opening CAA Championship game on Friday, March 11 at noon against the winner of the First Round game between Hofstra and UNCW.
Against the Dukes, Hannah Nihill led Drexel with 23 points in the game, 21 in the second half. Keishana Washington continued her torrid scoring pace this season with 17. She also tied for the team high with seven assists. Kate Connolly provided a spark for the offense with 15 points, hitting a career-high five three-pointers, part of a team season-best 12 treys. Tessa Brugler led DU with nine rebounds, scoring eight points and dishing a personal high seven assists.
You have to go back more than three years to see a shooting performance from the Dragons like the one they put up against JMU on Thursday. The last time a Drexel team connected on better than 57 percent of its attempts from the floor was February 17, 2019, a 76-45 win against Northeastern.
Drexel was also firing on all cylinders from beyond the arc, connecting on 12 treys in the game, its most since dropping 15 three-pointers against UNCW on February 12, 2017. Connolly was a big contributor, hitting a career-best five shots from distance.
Thursday was the fourth game this season for Drexel with 23 assists. It is the highest total this year for a CAA team against a Division I opponent.
Scouting Towson
Towson enters play 22-6 overall and is 13-4 in the CAA following an 85-71 loss against Delaware on Thursday. The Tigers, who have established a new program record for regular season wins, will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming CAA tournament.
Aleah Nelson leads three Towson players in double figure scoring at 17.1 points per game with Allie Kubek netting 14.8 and Anissa Rivera posting 10.4. Rivera tops the team in rebounding at 7.3 a contest while Nelson has dished 150 assists and is second in the conference at 5.4 dimes a game.
There isn't much Towson doesn't do well as it is in the top-three in the CAA in scoring (75.6 - 1st), scoring defense (61.3 - 3rd), rebounding (45.4 - 1st), and three-point percentage (31.3 - 3rd). It has also not been afraid to challenge itself, taking on three teams in the top-50 of the NET ratings, falling to NC State and Princeton, but beating Florida.
Weaknesses are hard to come by, but if there is one, it may be success rate at the free throw line as the Tigers are one of only two teams in the conference with a free throw percentage below 70. They make up for it in volume, ranking second in the CAA in attempts (522) and third in makes (364) with both numbers in the top-70 nationally.
Diane Richardson is in her fifth season at the helm of the Tigers with a record of 78-64. After going 9-21 in her first year, Towson went 20-13 in 2018-19 and captured the CAA tournament title.
All-Time Series
Tuesday is the 84th all-time meeting between the Dragons and Tigers with Drexel holding a 61-22 series lead. A large part of building that advantage came from February 28, 2010 through February 25, 2018 when DU won 19 games in a row against Towson. The Tigers have come back a bit, winning three of seven before the Dragons won the most recent matchup, a 58-54 contest on January 18, 2022.
Last Time Against The Tigers
And speaking of that last matchup, Drexel held off a furious Towson rally to come away with that 58-54 win. Washington had 17 points to lead four DU players in double figures and Mariah Leonard posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Up Next
Drexel opens the postseason on Friday, March 11 at noon in the CAA quarterfinals where it will face the winner of the First Round game between Hofstra and UNCW.
