Ross Blumenthal made a career-high 20 saves in the win
WESTBURY, N.Y. – Drexel scored five straight goals in the second half and rallied to defeat LIU, 10-8, on Saturday afternoon. Ross Blumenthal had a huge game in the cage, turning aside a career-best 20 shots, as the Dragons improved to 2-2.
LIU opened the second half with a pair of goals midway through the third quarter to take a 6-4 lead. The Dragons started their run with just under four minutes to play when Sean Donnelly hit Aidan Coll on the doorstep to make it 6-5. In the final minute of the quarter, Drexel caused a turnover and raced into the offensive end. Max Semple found Donnelly, who emphatically fired a shot into the cage, knotting the score at 6-6. In the fourth quarter, Coll, Ryan Genord and Semple scored consecutive goals to give Drexel a three-goal cushion with seven minutes to go. Genord sandwiched his second goal of the game around two LIU goals as the Dragons won the initial meeting between the two schools.
The Dragons were held scoreless for the opening quarter and trailed by two scores after one. They finally got on the board in the opening seconds of the second quarter. Genord set up Tristan Plotts on the man-up to cut the Sharks lead in half. That would start a four-goal run as Drexel would take a 4-2 lead. Donnelly scored two highlight-reel goals, including a behind-the-back shot after a nifty feed from Coll. Carter Begley capped the run with an extra-man goal with just under seven minutes to play in the half. The lead was short lived as LIU scored twice in the final three minutes to even the score at 4-4.
Genord finished the day with a pair of scores and three assists. It was his second five-point game of the season. Donnelly had a hat trick, his second of the season, while Coll scored twice and had two assists. The Dragons made the most of their opportunities, scoring 10 times on 28 shots. LIU outshot Drexel, 57-28, but Blumenthal proved to be too much in the cage. The senior made 12 stops in the second half as the Dragons were able to take the lead.
The Dragons return to play on Tuesday when Saint Joseph's visits Vidas Field.
