PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team was defeated by the UNCW Seahawks in a rainy morning game at the Drexel Softball Field. The Seahawks (29-13, 11-8 CAA) scored four runs in the top eighth to defeat Drexel (24-23, 5-14 CAA), 4-0. With the loss, Drexel has been eliminated from postseason contention.
Brooklyn Daly (10-9) was lights out in the series opener. The graduate student pitched eight innings and was responsible for just one earned run, holding UNCW to eight hits.
Jackie Masone went 1-for-3 with a single in the bottom of the third inning. Savaanah Garcia recorded the Dragons' other hit.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game entered a rain delay at the start of the bottom of the third, which lasted about an hour. Once the game returned, the Dragons ended UNCW's no-hitter. Masone placed a ball in shallow centerfield to reach first.
The two teams battled each other, but neither could score a run to take an advantage. In the eighth inning, a miscue in the outfield was all that UNCW needed to get ahead. The Seahawks scored four runs and then downed Drexel in the bottom of the inning.
WHAT'S NEXT
Drexel and UNCW are slated to play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 7. The first game from Penn Softball Field will kick off at noon.
