CAA Announces Drexel's Title IX 50th Anniversary Team

PHILADELPHIA - The Colonial Athletic Association continues its celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Title IX by recognizing five women from each institution who made a significant impact during their time as a student-athlete, coach or administrator. On Monday, the five honorees from Drexel were announced. The Drexel representatives were Kate Hynes, Gabriela Marginean, Christina Mastropaolo, Christiana Ogunsami and Lori Swanson.
Kate Hynes
Kate Hynes of women's swimming and diving completed one of the most outstanding careers of any diver at Drexel. A two-time Honorable Mention All-America selection, Hynes finished her four seasons undefeated in dual meets and was named the Colonial Athletic Association Diver of the Week 23 times in her career. She finished in ninth place in the 3-meter diving event at the NCAA Championships. The Brookville, Pa. native also was named the CAA's Most Outstanding Diver for four straight seasons. Hynes was the winner of the Philadelphia Inquirer Swimming and Diving Academic Performer of the Year for two straight seasons. She graduated with a degree from Drexel in business administration.
Gabriela Marginean
Gabriela Marginean redefined Drexel women's basketball history with her arrival on campus prior to the 2006-07 season. The Dragons' all-time leader with 2,581 points, Marginean also ranks at the top of Drexel's list in field goals, free throws, free throw percentage, and is second in rebounds, all while leading DU to its first Colonial Athletic Association Championship and NCAA tournament berth in 2009. Marginean racked up conference awards at every step of her career, earning CAA Rookie of the Year and Third Team honors in 2007, First Team accolades in 2008, 2009, and 2010, and was the 2009 CAA Player of the Year and conference tournament Most Outstanding Player. At the time of her graduation, she topped the CAA career scoring list and was a third round draft pick of the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA before embarking on a decade-long pro career in Europe and an appearance for Romania in the Tokyo Olympics. Her impact went beyond the court as well as she received the Dean Ehlers Award from the conference, which embodies the highest standards of leadership, integrity and sportsmanship in conjunction with his academic and athletic achievement.
Christina Mastropaolo
Mastropaolo turned in one of the best careers in Drexel field hockey history. She is Drexel's all-time leader in career points (146) and goals (60). Mastropaolo also ranks second in career assists with 26. Her 29 goals and 69 points in 2009 are still school records. That season, she was named the CAA Player of the Year as well as an All-American. The Dragons earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 2009 and upset No. 5 UConn in the opening round. She repeated as CAA Player of the Year, All-Region, and All-American in 2010 and was selected to the NFHCA Senior All-Star Game. Mastropaolo was also outstanding in the classroom, earning Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Performer of the Year honors in field hockey in 2010 and was a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree.
Christiana Ogunsami
Ogunsami made an immediate impact on the Dragons in just two years with the program. She became Drexel's all-time leader in goals against average and led the Dragons to consecutive CAA Tournament appearances for the first time in school history. A two-time First Team All-Conference performer, she was the CAA Co-Defender of the Year in 2016 after ranking in the top-20 in NCAA Division I with 109 saves (19th) and 10 shutouts (17th) while leading DU to a berth in the CAA championship game. In 2017, she had a 0.94 goals against average and was named United Soccer Coaches All-East Region. Following graduation, she returned to Drexel as an assistant coach, working with the goalkeepers.
Lori Swanson
Swanson was one of the best pitchers in Drexel softball history. A first team All-America East Conference selection in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001, Swanson was named the AEC Rookie of the Year in 1997, the AEC Pitcher of the Year in 1999 and AEC Scholar-Athlete in 2001. She holds the school record for strikeouts in a game, in a season and in a career. Swanson's 11 shutouts in one year tied the school mark. She also stands in the top four in career wins (58), ERA (1.52), complete games (79), shutouts (28) and no-hitters (3). She picked up additional honors along the way, including Verizon Academic All-America Third Team in 2001, Verizon Academic All-District II First Team in 1999, 2000 and 2001, NFCA Second Team All-Region in 2001, NAC/AEC All-Championship Team in 1997, 1999 and 2001 and ECAC Division I All-Star Honorable Mention in 2001.
