Drexel picks up its third consecutive victory to start the season
PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - The Drexel golf team shot seven-under par on Wednesday to win the Big 5 Championship, formerly the City 6 Championship, for the fourth straight time. The Dragons have now won three straight tournaments to start the fall for the first time in school history.
Oscar Maxfield had another outstanding day to lead the Dragons. The graduate student tied for the top spot overall with a five-under 67. Maxfield had three straight birdies on holes 14 through 16. He was edged out in a tiebreaker for medalist honors. Griffin Mitchell finished the round with a 70. He had just one bogey on the day. Drue Nicholas was also under par at 71. Nicholas played the back nine in two-under par, while teammate Caleb Taylor also got hot on the back. The sophomore had four birdies on the back, including three straight at one point as Drexel overtook Temple.
The Dragons picked up the three stroke win on a beautiful day at Sunnybrook Golf Club. The 6,989-yard course allowed just six players to shoot under par, three of those wearing the Blue and Gold. Temple finished in second place, followed by Villanova (+1), La Salle (+11) and Saint Joseph's (+14).
With the win, the Dragons are just one of two programs (Chattanooga) that have won every outing they have played in this fall. Earlier this season, Drexel picked up wins at the Temple Invitational and at the J.T. Poston Invitational hosted by Western Carolina. Ben Feld's team will go for an unprecedented fourth win in a row beginning Sunday at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate. The Dragons finished third at last year's tournament .
