PHILADELPHIA – A late-game comeback by the Drexel women's basketball team (2-2) was spoiled by the Saint Joseph's Hawks (4-0) on Sunday night in the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 64-53.
BY THE NUMBERS
Drexel and Saint Joseph's struggled offensively as both teams shot below their average shooting percentage. Drexel shot 6-of-19 in the first half but shot the ball much better in the second half, shooting 15-for-32.
Brooke Mullin scored 17 points to set a career-high. Amaris Baker finished her third game of the season in double digits. The junior contributed 14 to the total and also grabbed four rebounds. Laine McGurk finished the third-straight game with 10 or more points. The freshman scored 10 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game was a defensive battle through the first five minutes of play, with SJU leading 6-4. Grace O'Neill and Baker both had a bucket for the Dragons. At the end of the first 10 minutes, Saint Joseph's held a 13-9 lead.
The second quarter brought much of the same game, with both teams struggling offensively due to high-powered defense. Mullin scored six points in the quarter, while Talya Brugler tacked on eight points to the effort. SJU carried a 24-18 advantage into halftime.
Saint Joseph's poured on 21 points in the third quarter. But the Dragons matched the Hawks' intensity by scoring 14 themselves. The Dragons also held SJU to a scoring drought for the final two minutes of the quarter. Through three quarters, Mullin pieced together a 15-point performance. SJU ended the third quarter with a 45-32 lead.
Drexel mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter that cut the SJU lead to as small as seven points. However, the visitors widened the gap in the final two minutes of play and took the lead by 14. Brugler finished the game with 26 points and 10 rebounds for SJU.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons will take the Thanksgiving holiday preparing for their last stretch of the non-conference slate. The Dragons travel to Lehigh on Nov. 28th to face the Mountain Hawks at 6 p.m. The game can be seen on ESPN+. In December, Drexel will play six games to close out the calendar year, including a trip to Fort Myers, Fla., to play in the Homewood Suites Classic hosted by FGCU.
