Dragons Draw Delaware in CAA Quarterfinals,2-2, Fall in Penalty Kicks

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Drexel men's soccer team played the Delaware Blue Hens to a 2-2 draw in the Coastal Athletic Association's quarterfinals but fell in penalty kicks 4-2.
In the 13th minute of the match. Carlos Fernandez completed a pass by Orri Thorhallsson to give the Blue Hens their first goal of the match. Just about a minute later, Delaware scored another goal off a miscue by the Drexel backline.
Drexel chipped away at the deficit in the 23rd minute. A play started by Giancarlo Vaccaro found its way into the penalty box to Dominick Bachstein. The forward then played it to Antonio Illuminato, who completed the play. The goal was Illiminato's fifth of the season.
Patrick Short evened the match in the 36th minute with a high-powered shot from outside the box. The Blue Hens left Short unmanned at midfield, and the graduate student took advantage of the space. The shot went off the crossbar and straight down into the net.
Both teams were locked at two through two overtime periods, sending the match into penalty kicks. Drexel converted two of its attempts, while Delaware connected on four. Illuminato and Vaccaro both scored for Drexel.
Drexel ended its 2023 campaign with a 9-2-5 mark, the highest winning percentage since the Dragons went 13-4-2 in 1990.
