PHILADELPHIA – La Salle closed the game on an 8-1 run and defeated the Dragons, 67-61, in Drexel's first-ever game as a member of the Big 5. It was the season opener for both teams.
The game was tight throughout as neither team led by more than seven points the entire night. There were 28 lead changes in the contest and 11 ties. The Dragons took their final lead at 60-59 lead on a Yame Butler drive to the bucket with 3:14 to go. La Salle's Jhamir Brickus answered with a turnaround jumper to give the Explorers the advantage. Brickus would score six straight points as La Salle snapped a four-game losing skid at home to Drexel.
Amari Williams led Drexel with 16 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds and had four assists. Justin Moore added 15 points, five assists and three steals. Drexel shot 41 percent from the floor but struggled from long range, making just four of its 17 3-pointers. The Dragons were 0-for-6 from behind the arc in the second half.
Brickus led four Explorers in double figures with 18 points. Anwar Gill scored 15, while Khalil Brantley and Rokas Jocius added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Drexel will play its next game in the Big 5 pod on Nov. 14. The Temple Owls will come to the Daskalakis Athletic Center for the first time since 1985. Before that, however, Drexel will have a road contest at Winthrop on Saturday.
