ALBANY, N.Y. - Albany broke open a close game by scoring four times late in the third and in the fourth quarter to give the Great Danes an 11-7 win against Drexel on a frigid day in Albany. Temperatures were in the high teens at the start of the game and as expected, the cold and light snow led to a turnover filled contest. Drexel fell to 1-2 on the year, while Albany is also 1-2 in the early going.
UAlbany raced out to an early lead when Thomas Decker broke in on the left side and put the Danes on the board just 45 seconds in. They would increase that lead with two more goals in the first quarter. The Dragons were held scoreless in the first frame, but broke the drought two minutes into the second. Sean Donnelly came from behind the net and found the far upper right corner from a tough angle, making it 3-1. UAlbany added two more goals before the Dragons cut the deficit to 5-3 right before intermission. Ben Scandone set up Max Semple for his sixth goal this week at the 2:38 mark. With just 23 seconds to play in the half, Jack Mulcahy found Scandone, who scored his first collegiate goal.
The Great Danes scored the first two goals of the second half and had what appeared to be a comfortable four-goal lead. The Dragons were held without a goal for almost 12 minutes to start the third. However, Drexel found the net twice in a span of 48 seconds, trimming the deficit to 7-5. Scandone set up Sean Curcio on the doorstep for the first score. At the 2:20 mark of the third, Scandone tried to find a Drexel player in front of the cage. The connection was missed, but his attempted pass found its way past the UAlbany keeper, giving Drexel the momentum. The Dragons won the ensuing face-off, but turned it over and the Great Danes made the Dragons pay. Silas Richmond scored an a feed from Jake Piseno in transition to increase the lead to three goals. Drexel wasn't able to get closer the rest of the way.
