Softball Falls in Doubleheader Against Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Drexel softball team fell to the Monmouth Hawks in a doubleheader on Saturday. Monmouth took the first game, 3-2, and then won the second game, 6-4.
GAME ONE
Jessica Schable started the game and went five and a third innings, allowing seven runs and holding Monmouth to just two runs, one unearned. Lindsay Nelson (3-15) entered the game in relief and went two and a third holding Monmouth to two hits and just one run.
Grace Abbonizio went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Lily Meuninck went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Monmouth scored its first run in the second inning with an RBI single to center field.
The game fell quiet until the sixth inning when the Dragons scored two runs. Abbonizio tripled and scored Izzy Alamillo. Then, Meuninck hit a single to left field and scored Abbonizio. Heading into the bottom of the sixth, Drexel had a 2-1 lead.
Monmouth scored the tying run in the sixth inning by way of the sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the eighth, the Hawks hit an RBI single to left field to win the game.
GAME TWO
Lindsay Nelson (2-17) pitched a complete game, fanning two Monmouth Hawks.
Ashley Errico went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Devyn Demchak went 2-for-3 with an RBI double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Monmouth struck early once again. In the second inning, a pair of doubles put the Hawks up 2-0. In the fourth, Demchak hit her double down the right field line and scored Errico on the play. But the score of 2-1 did not stay long. Monmouth scored three runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth to make the score 6-2.
In the seventh inning, Meuninck singled to left field and scored Abbonizio. Immediately after, Errico doubled to center to plate two more runs, making the score 6-4. The Drexel rally ended there, however.
UP NEXT
Drexel returns to West Long Branch on Sunday to wrap the series with Monmouth. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
