Drexel Athletics is pleased to announce the establishment of the Janet E. and Barry C. Burkholder Women's Basketball Head Coach position – the third endowed coaching position at the University. The endowment was made possible thanks to the generosity of Janet Burkholder, who made the gift in honor of her late husband Barry '62, '70.
"The Burkholders have been great champions of Drexel and in particular our student-athletes," stated Director of Athletics Maisha Kelly. "By establishing this head coaching endowment, they extend their legacy on campus, while reinforcing the University's commitment to women's basketball."
Longtime friends of the program, the Burkholders have hosted the women's basketball team at their home and remained connected to the student-athletes and coaches. The Dragons have reached the postseason 13 times since 2009 and won or shared the CAA regular season title in four of the last six seasons. The program earned bids to the NCAA Tournament in 2009, 2020 and 2021 and won the Women's National Invitation Tournament in 2013.
"I am proud to be associated with Drexel and Drexel Women's Basketball. Since I have been a part of this vibrant community, I have always been impressed with the positive and state-of-the-art improvements. We are honored that Barry's legacy continues at Drexel. He would be proud to have the Burkholder Family name on the Women's Basketball Head Coach position. We look forward to celebrating Drexel Women's Basketball and to supporting student-athletes," said Janet Burkholder.
Head Coach Amy Mallon recently completed her third season at the helm of the women's basketball program and 19th overall at the University. The 2022 CAA Coach of the Year, she has a career record of 63-25.
"I am honored and humbled to be the first coach to benefit from this new endowment. Women's basketball at Drexel has always strived to excel and the Burkholders' support will ensure the success of the Dragons on the court for years to come," said Mallon.
Drexel is the first program in the CAA and Philadelphia Big 5 to endow its women's basketball head coaching position.
Among Drexel's most loyal benefactors, the Janet E. and Barry C. Burkholder Athletics Hall of Fame was unveiled and dedicated in their honor in 2012. Both Philadelphia-area college graduates, Mrs. Burkholder attended Thomas Jefferson Hospital Nursing School and Mr. Burkholder earned both his Bachelor of Sciences degree in 1962 and Master of Business Administration degree in 1970 from Drexel.
Mr. Burkholder served as a member of Drexel's Board of Trustees from 1998-2013. He received Drexel's Distinguished Alumni Award in 1988, was named to the Drexel 100 in 1998, received the A.J. Drexel Paul Award in 2007 and was honored with the Golden Dragon Society Award in 2012. He was also inducted into the Drexel ROTC Hall of Fame and served on the President's Board of Visitors.
