PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's soccer team, coached by Mark Fetrow in his head coaching debut, opened its season with a powerful performance against the Saint Joseph's Hawks on Thursday night, defeating the home team, 2-0.
The Dragons controlled every aspect of the match. With sound ball control and timely passing, Drexel dominated the game, owning most of the possession time. In the sixth minute of play, Dominick Bachstein kickstarted the Dragon offense as the senior picked up a pass that Cesar Banacloy intercepted and flicked on to Bachstein and found the back of the net.
In the 39th minute, Drexel tacked on another goal as Joshua Pulla scored his first of the year. The senior received a pass from Antonio Illuminato and buried the ball in the lower left portion of the Hawks goal.
Alessandro Capogna earned the start in goal, although the Dragons only called upon his services three times, as the Hawks could not break the Dragon back line and put a decent look on target.
A total of five players saw action for the first time in a Drexel uniform on Thursday night. Isaiah Whittaker-Francis, Patrick Short and Max Haberl all earned a start, while Julian Jordheim, Carles Aliberch and Ben Weller subbed on for the Dragons.
The Dragons travel to Easton, Pa. to face the Lafayette Leopards in a non-conference match on Monday, August 28 at 7 p.m.
