9/17/2023 4:15:00 PM | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - Natali Foster scored a pair of goals and Megan Hadfield stood tall in the cage as Drexel defeated the No. 20 UAlbany Great Danes, 4-3, in shootouts from Buckley Field. Drexel improved to 5-3 and collected its first-ranked win this fall. The last ranked win for the Dragons occured on October 9, 2022 in an 1-0 overtime victory over No. 20 William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
BY THE NUMBERS
Hadfield earned six saves in regulation and stopped three attempts in the shootout.
Eline Di Leva collected her first tally of the year.
Anna Getty recorded her second defensive save this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Drexel struck first in the fourth minute as DiLeva ran up from the left side of the circle and placed a shot around the UAlbany goalkeeper.
- The Great Danes tied the contest with two minutes left in the frame. Seconds later, they took a 2-1 lead into halftime after a successful penalty stroke attempt.
- Early into the third quarter, Natali Foster redirected a shot by Kenzie Lever for her sixth goal this season.
- UAlbany took a 3-2 lead on a goal in the 40th minute.
- The Dragons kept the pressure on the Great Danes defense and were awarded a penalty corner opportunity with under two minutes in regulation. Liz Chipman fired a shot from the top of the circle and found Foster on the doorstep to send the contest into overtime.
- Both teams were unable to capitalize on corner opportunities in OT1 and 2.
- In shootouts, Drexel earned a pair of successful attempts from Pili Lemoine and Foster. UAlbany was unsuccessful until the third and fourth rounds. Pien Elsen obtained DU's third goal of the shootout and Hadfield stopped the Great Danes' fifth attempt to capture the victory.
The Dragons remain at home against Towson and Saint Francis (Pa.) on September 22nd and 24th. Both contests will be streamed on FloLive($).
