PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's soccer team is set to host the #6 UNCW Seahawks on Sunday for the semifinals of the 2024 CAA Men's Soccer Championships. The second-seeded Dragons received a bye in the quarterfinals, which was played on Thursday. UNCW played Monmouth to a 1-1 draw and ultimately defeated the Hawks 5-4 in penalty kicks.
LAST TIME OUT
A four-goal first half by the Drexel men's soccer team lifted the team over the Charleston Cougars at Vidas Field on Saturday Afternoon, 5-1. Patrick Short scored two goals and assisted on another to help Drexel punch its fifth straight postseason berth.
THE VIDAS EFFECT
Drexel has been dominant at home since 2020. The Dragons have pieced together a formidable record of 24-2-7 at Vidas Field. The team's last loss at home came on September 6, 2022 against Lafayette, 2-0. Since then, Drexel has not lost in 20 matches.
AGAINST UNCW
A goal by Carles Aliberch in the 86th minute was not enough to secure Drexel a conference point in Wilmington, N.C., falling to the Seahawks, 2-1, on September 21.
UNCW scored its first goal in the 27th minute, capitalizing on a second chance shot. The goal was the only action in the first half as both teams played top-notch defense. In the second half, Josef Hefele scored the eventual game-winning-goal in the 53rd minute.
In the waning moments of the game, Drexel continued to attack the UNCW defensive unit. Aliberch found an opening and halved the Drexel deficit.
Drexel held the advantage in shots, pacing the Seahawks, 9-7. The Dragons also took the most shots on target, 4-3.
THE SERIES
UNCW holds the series record, 6-16. However, the Seahawks have not been victorious at Vidas field against the Dragons since 2018. The Dragons have won the past two meetings at home. The last time the two teams met in Philadelphia was on October 14, 2023. Drexel defeated UNCW, 2-0.
