2/22/2024 9:17:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Hofstra used a 16-point run in the second half to break open a close game and defeated Drexel, 69-57, at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Thursday night. Both teams are now 10-5 in CAA play.
In the second game in a week against the Pride, the Dragons (17-11) rattled off nine-straight points and took a 43-41 lead midway through the second half. Yame Butler had the final four points in the run, but that would be Drexel's last points for a span of just under five minutes. Hofstra (17-11) took advantage of numerous Drexel turnovers during that scoreless stretch to take control of the game. The Dragons couldn't get closer than eight points the rest of the way.
The Dragons, who played the game without starting point guard Justin Moore who was out with an illness, fell for the fourth straight time to the Pride in the building. They managed to shoot just 35 percent from the floor in the game and made just one 3-pointer in the second half. That came in the closing minutes. Butler had a strong offensive game off the bench with 14 points. Amari Williams led all Drexel players with 15 points, nine of those coming in the second half.
Tyler Thomas had another big game for the Pride. He finished with a game-high 28 points, just seven days after scoring 34 points against the Dragons. Darlinstone Dubar chipped in with 13 points and had seven rebounds. Jaquan Carlos added eight points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Pride, who won for the sixth time in their last seven games. Drexel's defense held the Pride to just 5-for-20 shooting from long range. Hofstra entered the game tops in the CAA in both 3-point percentage and 3-pointers per game. However, the Pride went in the paint for 34 points and scored 19 points off of Drexel's 13 miscues.
Drexel plays its final regular season road game on Monday night. The Dragons will face arch-rival Delaware in Newark. That game can be seen live on the CBS Sports Network.
