Men's Lacrosse Downs Sacred Heart, 12-6, at Vidas Field

PHILADELPHIA - Luke Tomak scored four times as Drexel defeated Sacred Heart, 12-6, at Vidas Field. The Dragons raced out to an early 6-1 lead and never trailed in the game as they improved the Dragons improved to 3-1.
Drexel scored three times in the opening five minutes of the game to take control early. Conor Hooley got the Dragons on the scoreboard just 70 seconds into the game on a rainy afternoon at Vidas. Tomak scored the next two within a span of 30 seconds, both from feeds from redshirt freshmen Gavin Kelly. Tomak's big quarter wasn't done, as he set up Max Semple on the man-up and then completed the natural hat trick with 1:16 left in the quarter. The Dragons led 5-1 after the first and made it a five-goal game in the second when Hooley set up Zach Augustine for Drexel's second man-up score of the half.
Sacred Heart had an answer and trimmed the deficit in half at 6-3. Sal Miccio started the two-goal run with 6:18 to play before the half and four minutes later Tucker Spencer found Morgan O'Reilly, who rifled a shot past Drexel's Drew McGill. The Dragons gained the momentum back at the close of the half. DU Head Coach Brian Voelker called a timeout and when play resumed Conor Hooley came from behind the net and ripped a shot from about five yards into the Pioneers' cage with 34 seconds on the clock. Connor Beals won the ensuing face-off and Drexel had another chance to extend the lead. Tomak was at it again, scoring his fourth goal of the first half as Drexel went to the locker room up five.
The Pioneers had a big chance to get back in the game when Drexel's Luke Carden was assessed a two-minute unreleasable penalty early in the third. Drexel's man-down unit killed the penalty, allowing only one shot before getting possession and running down the clock. Sacred Heart was able to score two goals later in the period, cutting the lead once again to three, but Drexel answered in the fourth. The Dragons scored three goals in the first three minutes of the final quarter to put the game away. Jack Joyner, Kelly and Caden Zadell scored within a span of 1:17 to make it 11-5. Each team added another late as Drexel won for the second straight week on its home field.
Drew McGill continued his solid start to the season in the cage. He made 13 saves and now has made 10 or more in each of his four starts. Tomak had a season-high five pointy. Hooley had a pair of goals and two assists, while Kelly handed out three assists and had four points. Fields had his best game of the season, winning 15 of his 20 face-offs.
Will Moulton scored a pair of goals to lead Sacred Heart. Alex Pazienza made 18 saves in a losing effort for the Pioneers.
Drexel will be back at Vidas Field on Tuesday night when the Dragons play Villanova at 5 p.m.
