CLINTON, S.C. – The Drexel softball team scored four runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Presbyterian Blue Hose in game one of the doubleheader, 5-3. The Dragons then dropped the second game of the Presbyterian Scotsman Invitational to the Blue Hose, 5-2.
GAME ONE
Lindsay Nelson (2-4) tossed one of her best games in the young season, going the distance only allowing six hits and holding the Blue Hose to just two runs. The Old Bridge, N.J. native fanned five batters in the effort.
Kalea Calugay went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run herself. Mia Garza also went 2-for-4 and drove a run in.
Drexel used a four-run seventh inning to take its first lead against the Big South opponent.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Presbyterian started early, beating out an infield single to shortstop. But, the Blue Hose rally was stopped prematurely two batters later, limiting the damage to just two.
In the fourth inning, Drexel evened the game with a single to left field off the bat of Izzy Alamillo. Ameryn Humble scored and Annabelle Smink was out at third after trying to take the bag.
PC took the lead back in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly. With a runner on third, Nelson found a way to pitch herself out of the jam by striking out the next batter.
In the top of the seventh, Drexel pieced together a four-run inning to take the lead for good. The run started with a Lindsay Hunt single down the left field line that scored the tying and game-winning run. The Dragons then scored an insurance run as Garza drew a throwing error by the shortstop. Hunt scored Drexel's fifth run of the game.
GAME TWO
Allison Hoppe (0-5) started the second game and could only retire a batter before Natalie Alldred replaced her and pitched the rest of the game. Alldred pieced together the best game so far this season, going 5.2 innings, holding the Blue Hose to one hit, and fanning nine batters.
Alamillo led the Dragons with a pair of hits and a run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Presbyterian was quick to apply pressure to the Dragons, scoring four runs in the first inning. Two of those runs came the way of bases-loaded walks.
In the top of the third, Calugay reached on a fielding error by the Blue Hose centerfielder. On the play, Alamillo and Abbonizio were both able to score.
In the bottom of the fourth, Presbyterian scored an insurance run to extend its lead to three.
UP NEXT
Drexel returns to Blue Hose Softball Complex at Young Park to play Presbyterian again on Sunday, before coming home to Philadelphia to begin conference play. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m.
