McGill Makes Career-High 21 Saves in the Loss
PHILADELPHIA - Drew McGill made a career-high 21 saves, but Drexel fell to Delaware on Senior Day at Vidas Field, 13-6. The No. 18 Blue Hens scored eight second-half goals to break open a game that was 5-4 at halftime.
The teams were engaged in a defensive struggle in the early going. Drexel (5-8, 2-4) got on the board first halfway through the first period when Gavin Kelly picked up an unassisted score. The Dragons defense held the Blue Hens off the board until the final two minutes of the quarter. John McCurry scored twice in a span of 51 seconds to give the Hens the lead with less than a minute to go in the first quarter. The lead extended to 3-1 when Matt Acchione picked up a loose ball in front of the cage and beat McGill to make it 3-1. The Dragons were held off the board for a span of 18 minutes, but after that scored three goals in succession to take a 4-3 lead. Conor Hooley, Luke Tomak and Will Farrell each had unassisted goals in a span of just 57 seconds. The lead wouldn't last long as J.P. Ward scored an unassisted goal at the 3:35 mark and then set up Mike Robinson with just five seconds left before intermission to make it 5-4 UD.
The second half was controlled by the Blue Hens (8-3, 6-0). Acchione scored the only two goals, the second on the man-up to increase the lead to three. Delaware added another before Caden Zadell cut it to 8-5 on a goal from Jack Joyner. Delaware answered with five straight goals, three by Robinson, to put the game away. Max Semple added a late goal, his 28th of the year, to make the final 13-6.
McGill was outstanding on the afternoon despite giving up 13 goals. His 21 saves were the most by a Drexel goalkeeper since Bruce Bickford made 22 stops against Virginia in 2006. It was just the fifth time since joining the CAA a Drexel goalie made 20 or more saves. Connor Beals had a strong day at X, winning 12 of 19 face offs.
Ward finished the day with three goals, four assists and seven points for Delaware. Robinson scored four times, while Acchione added three. The Blue Hens outshot the Dragons, 56-38 and had 14 more ground balls than DU.
The Dragons are still alive for the fourth playoff spot in the CAA. They need to beat Monmouth on the road on Wednesday and have Hofstra defeat Stony Brook. In that scenario, Drexel would get the fourth seed.
