TOWSON, Md. – Drexel had its season come to an end in the CAA semfinals at No. 15 Towson. The Tigers used a five-goal first half fun to take the lead and never trailed in the contest. Towson will face either Fairfield on Delaware in the CAA title game on Saturday. The Dragons, who made the CAA Championships for the fifth straight year, closed the year with a 6-9 record.
Bode Maurer, who had a career night, started the scoring for Towson, but just 12 seconds later Liam Kammar raced down the field in transition to even the score at 1-1. The Tigers picked up their second of the game after a Drexel turnover behind the net, which led to an easy Chop Gallagher score. Once again, Drexel answered, this time at the end of the shot clock. Conor Hooley found Max Semple on the right wing, and the junior backhanded a shot home to even it at 2-2.
Semple's goal would be Drexel's last goal until the final seconds of the half. Towson (12-3) scored two goals to take the lead at the end of the first quarter, then added three more in the second quarter. Maurer had a pair of goals in each quarter to set his career-high for goals before intermission. The Dragons closed the deficit to 7-3 with just eight seconds left in the half. Jack Joyner found Witt Crawford on the left wing and the freshman deposited home his 12th goal of the year.
The Tigers put the game away in the third quarter. Towson scored five of the first six goals to take a 12-4 lead. Luke Tomak had Drexel's goal during that stretch. Jack Joyner picked up Drexel's other goal of the third quarter, his second point of the afternoon.
The Dragons were unable to cut into the deficit as the league's top scoring team had its second highest scoring game of the season.
Towson's Maurer had seven goals and nine assists in the game. His previous career high for points was three. Nick DeMaio, the CAA Offensive Player of the Year had three goals and five assists, while Joaquin Villagomez had four goals and two assists.
