PHILADELPHIA. – Steve Boyle has been named the head coach of the Drexel Men's Lacrosse program. The announcement was made by Drexel Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation Maisha Kelly. Boyle, who was named Interim Head Coach after Brian Voelker retired, is the seventh head coach in Drexel lacrosse history.
"After a national search, that included a talented group of coaches, we are excited to have Steve take the reins of the Men's Lacrosse program", said Maisha Kelly. "Steve's professionalism, commitment, and vision for the program expressed charting a new course for pursuing success while embracing the legacy of Drexel men's lacrosse. Steve's investment in the program has been evident in his role as an assistant, particularly as a tireless recruiter and connector for student-athletes and members of the department. I look forward to his transition to head coach and continued collaboration with Deputy AD Nick Gannon and myself."
Boyle has been an assistant with the Dragons for the last 10 seasons. During that time, the Dragons qualified for eight of nine Coastal Athletic Association postseason tournaments, including the last five in a row. They won the 2021 CAA title to advance to their second-ever NCAA Tournament.
"I want to first thank Vice President and Director of Athletics Maisha Kelly, Associate Athletic Director Nick Gannon, Senior Vice President Subir Sahu, and the entire Drexel community for this incredible opportunity," said Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Steve Boyle. "I would also like to thank the valuable members of the search committee for all of their time, effort, and insights. Lastly, I want to thank Brian Voelker for all of his support, guidance, and leadership over the last 10 years we were able to spend together. I have been so passionate about this program and University, I cannot wait to start this new chapter leading our young men to success both on and off the field. My family and I couldn't be more excited. I'm humbled and grateful to the administration, community, and all of the incredible alumni who represent Drexel Lacrosse."
Boyle was a key part of a staff that reached the CAA Championship game twice in the last five seasons. During the championship run in 2021, the Dragons scored at least 10 goals in all but one regular-season game and led the CAA with 13.62 goals per contest, which tied for 12th in the nation. Drexel had five players score at least 19 goals and had four 30-point scorers in just 13 games. Reid Bowering was named an Honorable Mention All-America, while Ryan Genord was a USA Lacrosse All-American. In 2022, Jack Mulcahy, one of the Dragons' midfielders, was named the CAA's Offensive Player of the Year. Both Genord and Mulcahy were First Team All-CAA selections. In 2023, the Dragons were 5-2 in conference play, finished in second place during the regular season and were the second seed in the postseason. This past season, Gavin Kelly became the first Drexel freshman to be named First Team All-CAA.
Boyle's offensive unit led the CAA in scoring during the 2019 season and finished 13th in the nation with more than 13 goals per game. Drexel's man-up unit scored 39 goals, the most in the nation, one more than Penn State. The team also had a .473 extra-man percentage, which was fourth in all of Division I. Three of Drexel's offensive players were named to All-CAA teams in 2019. In 2018, the Dragons also scored more than 10 goals per game and led the CAA in shooting percentage (.315). The previous season, Drexel's man-up unit led the CAA and finished 13th in the nation.
Prior to his arrival at Drexel, Boyle was an assistant at Brown for three seasons under Lars Tiffany. He joined the Brown staff after serving as the offensive coordinator at St. Paul's School for Boys in Baltimore.
A 2010 graduate of Johns Hopkins, Boyle was a member of the 2007 NCAA Championship team and was awarded the Bob Scott Award given to the school's top freshman. A three-time All-American, Boyle led the team in scoring as a senior and was named the team's Outstanding Attackman Award winner in 2009 and 2010. He was selected 12th overall in the 2010 Major League Lacrosse Draft by the Boston Cannons and played in the league until 2015.
