PHILADELPHIA - Elon used a late 10-3 run to pull away from Drexel and defeated the Dragons, 65-54, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Thursday. The Dragons fell to 10-8 overall and 2-3 in CAA play, while Elon won for the 13th time this season and is now 4-1 in the CAA.
After falling behind early by four, Elon went on an 8-0 run, keyed by five points from Sam Sherry to take a 14-8 lead. The Phoenix wouldn't trail again in the game. Elon opened up an 11-point lead but Drexel battled back and cut it to six at intermission. The second half was a defensive battle as both teams went scoreless for more than four minutes to start the frame. Drexel broke the drought, trimming the lead to two with 15 minutes remaining after buckets by Cole Hargrove and Kevon Vanderhorst. Each time Drexel made a run, the Phoenix had an answer. Drexel got the lead down to three with 5:23 to play after a Yame Butler 3-pointer, but once again Elon scored five straight points as the Phoenix snapped a five-game losing streak at the DAC.
Kobe MaGee led Drexel with 17 points and six rebounds. Jason Drake added 15 and was 3-for-5 from deep despite getting in early foul trouble. Butler was also in double figures with 11 points. The Dragons committed 10 turnovers which the Phoenix turned into 18 points.
Elon was led by Sherry, who finished with 19 points and nine rebounds. T.J. and T.K. Simpkins each had 15 points. T.J. Simpkins was 5-for-6 from the floor, while T.K. Simpkins came off the bench to knock down four 3-pointers. The Phoenix controlled the glass (33-25) and had 10 offensive rebounds.
Drexel concludes its three-game homestand on Monday against Hofstra. The Dragons will host the Pride at 3 p.m. on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in a game that can be seen live on the CBS Sports Network.
