PHILADELPHIA - Cole Hargrove scored 11 of his game high 15 points in the second half and Yame Butler added 14 points as Drexel (11-8, 3-3 CAA) came from behind to defeat Hofstra, 60-55. The Dragons trailed by as many as 11 points, but held the Pride (10-9, 2-4) to just 21 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes to pick up the win.
The game was the 100th meeting between the two schools who have been conference rivals for more than a half a century. Hofstra now holds a slim 51-49 advantage. The Pride had won 13 of the last 15 games in the series entering Monday.
The Dragons trailed by 11 with 18:38 left in the game after a Michael Graham lay-up to make it 40-29. Three minutes later, Butler got the Dragons offense going when he drained a 3-pointer to start an 11-0 run to give Drexel the lead at 44-42. The game was tied on two more occasions before Hofstra's Jean Aranguren hit a trey with 5:37 to play to put the Pride up by a point. Drexel would answer with four straight points from Hargrove, giving Drexel a three-point advantage. Hofstra cut it to one with 3:12, but this time Yame Butler made a free throw and then converted his own miss to make it 58-54 with 29 ticks remaining on the clock. Aranguren was fouled on the next possession and made one of his two free throw attempts, making it a one-possession game. Drexel missed a pair of one-and-one opportunities that would have sealed it. Hofstra then called timeout and set up a play, but KiJan Robinson stepped out of bounds before releasing his 3-point attempt that would have tied it. Hofstra then fouled Jason Drake, who sank both free throws, clinching the win for the Dragons.
Hargrove added nine rebounds and three steals to go along with his 15 points. Butler snared a season-high eight rebounds as Drexel won the battle of the boards, 41-32. Aranguren led Hofstra with 14 points, while Cruz Davis added 10.
Hofstra missed its first three shots of the game, but then made its next 11 as the Pride opened up an 11-point lead. Drexel was able to cut the deficit to six on two occasions, but the Pride held the Dragons off the scoreboard for the final 4:33 of the half to take a 37-26 lead at intermission.
Drexel will head to Boston later in the week and visit Northeastern on Thursday. The Dragons tip-off at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m.
