WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.- Drexel rallied from an 18-point deficit to tie the game at the end of regulation, but came up short in double overtime at Monmouth on Thursday night, 104-97. The Dragons saw their record drop to 12-10 overall and 4-5 in Coastal Athletic Association play. Yame Butler and Villiam Garcia Adsten each scored 17 points to lead the Dragons. Monmouth's Madison Burr led everyone with a career-high 40 points.
Shane Blakeney forced the overtime when he drained a 3-pointer with less than a second left from the top of the key to even the score at 80. They had trailed for the entire second half and cut the lead to one on four occasions. Abdi Bashir, Jr. gave the Hawks a three-point lead with seven seconds to go on a pair of free throws, but Drexel was able to get the ball in and get a shot off before time expired to tie it up.
In overtime, neither team could get more than a one-possession lead. Yame Butler tied the game at 91-91 with two free throws at the 1:21 mark. Those were the last points of the overtime, as both teams had empty possessions, forcing the game to go to another frame.
Garcia Adsten had his best game in a Drexel uniform. The sophomore was 7-for-8 from the floor and had five boards. Butler had his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out in the second overtime. Jason Drake added 16 points, while Victor Panov (14 pts.), Cole Hargrove (13 pts.) and Blakeney (10 pts.) were also in double figures.
Burr had a career night, with his 40-point performance. He was a perfect 19-for-19 from the line and 10-for-11 from the floor. Abdi Bashir, Jr. scored 32 points for Monmouth, 20 of those points coming in the first half. The Dragons did a much better job on him in the second half, again keyed by Shane Blakeney's defense. The sophomore blocked three shots as Drexel held Bashir to just 2-for-8 shooting after his big first half.
The Dragons shot 46 percent from long range and also made 21 of their 23 free throw attempts. They outrebounded the Hawks, 48-43, and had 23 offensive boards.
Monmouth used a 17-3 run in the first half to erase an early four-point Drexel lead. The Hawks extended their lead to as many as 18 before the Dragons chipped away late in the half to trim the halftime deficit to 44-33.
Drexel is back on the road this Saturday. The Dragons head to Towson for a 6 p.m game, which can be seen live on the CBS Sports Network.
