TOWSON, Md. - Victor Panov's tip in at the buzzer was waved off after review as Towson escaped with a 55-54 win against Drexel.
The Dragons (12-11, 4-6) came up with a stop on the defensive end and had the final possession. Kobe MaGee drove to the right and his shot bounced off the rim. Panov grabbed the rebound and scored. However, the referees looked at the tape and Drexel lost a heartbreaker at TU Arena.
The Tigers (14-9, 9-1) led for the majority of the second half, but Drexel took the lead on a Shane Blakeney lay-up with 8:44 left. Towson tied it, but Blakeney and Yame Butler scored on consecutive possessions to give DU a four-point lead. The Tigers then had a rare five-point possession. Mekhi Lowery scored and was fouled. He missed the free throw, but then Towson got the offensive rebound and Dylan Williamson hit a 3-pointer, making it a 51-50 Towson lead. Drexel would not lead again. They cut the deficit to one on two occasions, the last on a Villiam Garcia Adsten lay-up with 3:10 play. That would be the last points of the contest as Towson beat Drexel for their eighth straight win.
The Dragons opened the game on fire from the floor, making eight straight field goals to start the contest. Kobe MaGee drained a 3-pointer and was fouled, converting a four-point play as Drexel led 21-9 early in the first half. Towson answered with a 13-0 run of its own, nine of those coming from Tyler Tejada. The Tigers took the lead on an Abdou Samb lay-in with 9:39 to play and did not trail again in the first half. After the 8-for-8 start for the Dragons, they proceeded to make just one shot over the next 12 plus minutes of play. Drexel was able to cut the Towson lead, which was nine at one point, to 35-29 at halftime as the Tigers were held scoreless for the last 2:36 of the opening frame.
Kobe MaGee had his first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Blakeney also had 11 points, while Butler finished with 10. Tejada led Towson with 20, while Williamson added 18.
Drexel outrebounded Towson, 37-31, but the Tigers scored 15 points off of their 11 offensive rebounds.
Drexel heads back to Philadelphia to start a two-game homestand. William & Mary begins the stretch Thursday night at the DAC when the two teams tip-off at 7 p.m.
