GREENSBORO, N.C. – Yame Butler scored 24 points as Drexel went into the Corbett Sports Center and came away with a 68-59 win at North Carolina A&T. The Dragons held the Aggies to just 19 percent shooting in the second half as Drexel evened its CAA record to 1-1. The Dragons are now 9-6 overall.
North Carolina A&T trailed by one at intermission, but took the lead on the first possession of the final frame on a pair of free throws. Drexel answered with seven straight points to take a lead it would not relinquish. Kobe MaGee made a pair of free throws, Yame Butler scored in the paint and Villiam Garcia Adsten knocked down an open 3-pointer to put the Dragons ahead, 41-35. The Dragons held off the Aggies (4-12, 0-3) the rest of the way, increasing the lead to as many as 12 points in the final minutes.
The Dragons defense was solid all night, especially in the second half. N.C. A&T had a stretch where it made just one field goal in a span of more than 10 minutes. The Aggies were held to just two 3-pointers in the game, the second coming in the closing minute by Landon Glasper. The Dragons held Glasper and Ryan Forest to 13 points each. The duo came into the game ranked second and fourth, respectively, in the CAA in scoring.
Butler had his best game of the year, if not one of the best of his Drexel career. He shot 9-for-13 from the floor and was 3-for-5 from deep. The senior added five rebounds, two blocks and two steals without committing a turnover in 34 minutes. MaGee, Jason Drake and Shane Blakeney each added nine points. Magee led the team with eight rebounds and tied with Drake with four assists. Cole Hargrove rejected four shots to go along with seven points and seven rebounds.
Drexel shot 52 percent in the second half and finished the afternoon in Greensboro at 44 percent. The Dragons won the battle of the boards, 46-36, with both teams snaring 14 offensive rebounds. Nikolaos Chitikoudis had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Aggies. With the win, Drexel is now 3-1 all-time against N.C. A&T.
The Dragons return home briefly before closing out this three-game road swing at Stony Brook on Thursday night. Drexel finally returns to the Daskalakis Athletic Center next Saturday when preseason CAA favorite Towson comes to Philadelphia.
