WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Drexel field hockey team took the #13 Monmouth Hawks to overtime on Friday afternoon, but could not overcome the nationally-ranked opponent, falling 3-2 in West Long Branch, N.J. The Dragons are now 6-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
It took just over a minute and a half for the Dragons to open the scoring. Drexel earned a corner on its first attack of the game. Valentine Van Hellemont inserted the ball to Pili Lemoine, who set it for Natali Foster. Foster's shot deflected off a Monmouth stick and went into the air. Marti Sanabria tapped the ball in the goal to finish the play and put Drexel ahead by one with her second goal of the season.
The Hawks evened the score halfway through the second quarter, converting on a corner of their own.
In the second half, the Hawks took the lead five minutes into the quarter using another corner opportunity. After the insert, the ball was dished without looking, and the shot was then deflected into the goal to put Monmouth ahead.
Five minutes later, Drexel evened the score once more. Fleur Hamers received a cross from Lemoine, who had stolen the ball seconds prior. Hamers had a wide-open look on goal and finished the shot for her fourth goal of the season.
After 60 minutes, the score remained at two and went into overtime. After a minute and a half of overtime play, Monmouth found its way to the cage and finished the play to end the contest.
