Dragons Fall in Second Big 5 Pod Game to Saint Joseph's, 57-55

PHILADELPHIA – The Derxel women's basketball team was defeated by the Saint Joseph's Hawks, 57-55, on Saturday afternoon at Hagan Arena on Hawk Hill. The Dragons received 20-point performances from Amaris Baker and Laine McGurk. With the loss, Drexel will play in the third-place game of the Toyota Women's Big 5 Classic against Temple on December 7 at the Finneran Pavillion on the campus of Villanova.
BY THE NUMBERS
Baker paced the team, scoring 22 points on 8-for-18 shooting and 3-for-4 from deep. McGurk added 20 points to her stat sheet and made six free throws, a career-high. It is the first time that two Dragons scored 20 points in a single game since Chloe Hodges and Amaris Baker each scored 20 against Penn State on November 24, 2024.
The Dragons shot 50 percent from long range and shot a near-perfect 9-for-10 from the charity stripe.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons jumped out to an early four-point lead through five minutes of the first quarter. Deja Evans contributed four points and added three rebounds and a block to her stat sheet. Drexel continued its scoring with a 10-4 run to end the quarter to give itself a 10-point lead, 16-6. The Dragons held SJU to 3-for-16 shooting a 0-for-7 mark from long range.
The Dragons scored seven points in the opening five minutes of the quarter, five being from the bench. Saint Joseph's managed to cut the game to one point with an eight-point run, but McGurk made two straight threes to help extend Drexel's lead once more. Drexel went into the locker room ahead by four points, 29-25.
SJU opened the half with a six-point run that gave them their first lead since the team opened the game with a lead. The Hawks extended their lead to six before a seven-point Drexel run pushed the game back in favor of the Dragons. Drexel ended the third quarter ahead by one point, 45-44.
The Hawks outscored the Dragons 9-6 in the first seven minutes in the fourth quarter. Despite Drexel out rebounding the home team, 7-4, Drexel was only 2-for-9 from the field. The Hawks were successful on a trey, which was the difference-maker up until the media timeout. Out of the media timeout, Drexel converted on a basket and tied the game up at 53. SJU took the lead with two minutes remaining and hit a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining to pull ahead by four. On the other end of the court, McGurk was fouled with two seconds remaining. The junior the first two free throws and a lane violation turned the ball back to SJU to end the game.
