PHILADELPHIA - UMBC scored five straight goals in the second quarter and went on to a 9-6 win against Drexel in the season-opener for both teams at Vidas Field. The Retrievers spoiled the debut of Drexel Head Coach Steve Boyle, who was elevated to the position this summer.
UMBC opened the scoring on an Aydan Davis goal four minutes into the contest. The Dragons would even the game midway through the first when Tristan Plotts found Will Farrell to make it 1-1. Witt Crawford added another for DU and when Owen Knight fed Gavin Kelly early in the second, the Dragons found themselves ahead 3-1. That lead didn't last for long as the Retrievers went on a run to end the first half. They scored five straight goals, including four in a span of 2:34 late in the quarter to take a 6-3 lead. Nick Gutierrez scored the final two goals for UMBC.
Drexel trimmed the deficit to two early in the third quarter when Knight set up Max Semple making it 6-3. With that goal, Semple became just the 39th player in Drexel history to reach 100 career points. He is now tied with Scott Perri for 16th all-time in goals at the school with 89. That goal would be as close as the Dragons would get. UMBC would extend the lead at the 12:21 mark of the third, and 20 seconds later, they made it 8-4 when Corey Myers scored for the second time on the afternoon. Crawford scored his second of the day late in the third, but the Dragons would go scoreless for the next 20 minutes. Conor Hooley broke the drought in the final minute but Drexel was behind by four at that point.
Aidan Shortley had a good day for the Dragons, winning nine of his 14 face-off attempts. Liam Kammar had a team-high three caused turnovers to go along with five ground balls. Hooley, Crawford and Knight each finished the day with two points. For Knight, they were his first two career points. Freshman Alec Tulio also picked up his first career assist. Drew McGill made seven stops in the cage.
Connor McMahon made 10 saves in earning the win for the Retrievers. Myers led the team with three points, while Gutierrez and Connor Chick each had two goals.
The Dragons will be back in action at Vidas Field on Tuesday when they host Lafayette. Face-off will be at 5 p.m.
