Dragons Unable to Outlast Monmouth; Fall, 50-47

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Drexel women's basketball team was defeated by the Monmouth Hawks, 50-47, on Friday night in West Long Branch, N.J. The Hawks took the lead on a 9-0 run with 2:42 remaining to erase a six-point Drexel lead.
BY THE NUMBERS
Amaris Baker scored 20 points and corralled four rebounds in the effort. The senior converted on nine field goals and found the bottom of the basket twice from beyond the arc.
Chloe Hodges finished with eight points, six rebounds and five steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Monmouth took a 11-6 lead in the first quarter after shooting 4-for-13. The Dragons received four points from Baker to help trim the deficit.
In the second quarter, Monmouth extended its lead one more point, outscoring Drexel, 13-12. The first half was the Baker show. The senior scored 11 points on 5-for-14 shooting. Hodges added a trey, while Laine McGurk and Molly Lavin each scored two. Drexel forced 13 Hawk turnovers in the first half.
After opening the second half on a 14-6 run, Drexel took its first lead with 3:08 remaining in the quarter. A baseline jumper by O'Neill led to a Monmouth timeout. After trading the lead multiple times, Drexel and Monmouth ended the third quarter tied, 37-37. Baker added nine points to her stat sheet while O'Neill scored five and Iriona Gravely and McGurk added two and three points, respectively.
The back-and-forth play continued into the fourth. Hodges hit a trey with 5:28 remaining to give Drexel a two-point lead, heading into the final media timeout of the game. With just over two minutes remaining, Monmouth finished a five-point run to pull within one of the Dragons. Monmouth took the lead with 1:11 remaining on a mid-range shot. Monmouth produced a turnover and scored a basket on the other end to extend its lead to three with 8.8 seconds remaining.

The Dragons finish the weekend at home on Sunday, where they host the UNCW Seahawks at 1 p.m. The Dragons will also celebrate Girls & Women in Sports Day, where all youth girls (ages 12 and under) will be given admission for free.
