Griffin Mitchell Named to All-Tournament Team After Finishing Second Individually
SWAINTON, N.J. – The Drexel golf team came from behind to force a playoff but fell to Elon at the CAA Championships at the Union Legue National Golf Club. The Dragons were behind by five strokes late in the round but tied it when Griffin Mitchell made a long eagle putt to force the playoff. However, the Phoenix made two eagles as the Dragons' season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion.
Campbell, Drexel and Elon headed into the final round just three strokes apart. The Phoenix and Dragons slowly separated themselves from the pack. Elon took over the lead late, but Drexel showed their grit once again. Mitchell and Drue Nicholas, seniors playing in their last event, both birdied 17. On the final hole, Nicholas made birdie as did Brockton English. Mitchell put his second shot on the par five on the green and drained a putt of just under 20-feet to get the Dragon faithful who made the trip to the shore on their feet.
In the playoff, where all five players from each team played the 18th hole and the top four scores were recorded, Elon made two eagles, including one that was chipped in from the rough. The Dragons had birdies from Mitchell and John Keba as well as pars from Caleb Taylor and Nicholas.
Mitchell finished second overall in the Championship and was named to the All-Tournament team. He fired a 71 on Tuesday and finished the 54-holes in one-under par. Nicholas shot 73, while English had a 74 and Taylor a 75 on the 7,274 yard, par-72 course. Tuesday's weather was sunny and warm after a cool windy second round on Monday.
Elon and Drexel finished at 13-over par to force extra golf, the first time since 2009 the CAA Championships went to a playoff. Campbell placed third, five strokes behind the leaders. Charleston was in fourth place at 28-over par, while UNCW was fifth at 38-over par.
