NEWARK, Del. – Delaware broke open a close game by scoring seven goals in the third quarter and defeated Drexel, 16-12, in a Coastal Association game at Delaware Stadium in Newark. It was the last meeting between the two schools as members of the CAA.
The Blue Hens (7-6, 3-4) opened the second half with three straight goals to take a 9-5 lead. Teddy Luthy scored his second goal of the game to break the run, but UD went on to score three goals in a span of just 44 seconds to take control of the game. The lead swelled to 14-6 early in the fourth quarter before the Drexel (7-7, 4-3) offense scored six goals in the final period.
Max Semple scored three times, two on the man-up, in the fourth quarter to lead Drexel. Semple had his 21st career hat trick and moved into third place on the career goals list at Drexel with 123. Freshman Alec Tulio scored a goal and handed out two assists for DU. Conor Hooley and Luthy each added a pair of goals. Brendan Donnelly made 14 stops in the cage for DU.
Jason Kolar had a big night for the Hens. He scored four goals and handed out three assists. Five other players each scored twice as Delaware won its final CAA game. The Blue Hens finished fifth in the CAA and did not qualify for the postseason. Delaware outshot Drexel, 52-34, and won 20 of 31 face-offs as the Blue Hens controlled play most of the night.
Things started well for the Dragons as Drexel raced out to a two-goal lead in the first two minutes of the game on goals by Tulio and Matt Martin. The lead was short lived as Delaware's Tyler Owings scored back-to-back goals in a span of just 1:46 to make it 2-2. Drexel broke the tie when Knight found Hooley at the 8:43 mark of the first. Knight wasn't done in the first quarter, as late in the stanza, he set up Will Farrell's eight goal of the year. Drexel led 4-2 after the first, despite being outshot 17-6.
The Blue Hens got their offense going in the second quarter as they rattled off four consecutive goals to make it a 6-4 game. Kolar scored three of Delaware's four goals as the Hens took the lead for the first time. Drexel's offense was held off the board for more than 11 minutes before breaking the drought with 4:10 to play in the half. Luthy dodged past his defender on the left side and deposited his third goal of the year making it a 6-5 contest. That score would stand up as the teams closed the first half.
The Dragons will begin postseason play on Thursday. The opening round of the CAA Championship will be played at Towson. The Dragons will find out their opponent on Saturday after the remaining CAA regular season games wrap up.
