Blakeney and Turner Lead the Way as Drexel Beats Towson, 68-62

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's basketball team defeated the Towson Tigers, 68-62, Sunday at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Shane Blakeney led the team with 24 points, tying his career high. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker's Local 98 is once again the presenting sponsor of Drexel Men's Basketball.
BY THE NUMBERS
Blakeney shot 10-15 from the field while rebounding the ball six times and blocking a shot.
Garfield Turner scored a career-high 16 points while rebounding the ball 13 times, also a career-high.
Victor Panov grabbed seven rebounds along with eight points, a block and an assist.
Defensively, Drexel held Towson to 36% shooting and only allowed the Tigers to rebound the ball nine times off the offensive glass.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Martin de Laporterie opened the scoring with a jump shot with 19:35 on the clock. The two teams then went back and forth, with neither team pulling ahead. A Blakeney layup gave the Dragons a 10-8 lead with 12:10 remaining. The Tigers tied things up then took the lead off a pair of free throws before another layup from Blakeney started a 7-0 Drexel run that was capped off by free throws from Turner. Back-to-back baskets from Towson cut the lead to three, but Drexel responded with more free throws from Turner, making it a five-point game with just over six minutes in the half. The Tigers made it 21-20 with 5:07 remaining before a Blakeney three and free throws from Panov pushed the lead back up to six. Towson made it 28-24 before an Eli Beard three-pointer beat the buzzer to extend Drexel's lead to seven with 2:18 remaining.
The half ended on a Blakeney jump shot to give Drexel a 33-27 lead. In the first half, the Dragons held the Tigers to a single three and 29.6% shooting overall.
The second half started with a Towson basket to make it a four-point game before an and-one from Blakeney extended Drexel's lead, 36-29, with 17:56 to play. Back-to-back baskets from the Tigers cut the lead back down to two, but a Kevon Vanderhorst jump shot kicked off a 7-0 run that was capped off by a Turner and-one with 13:53 left.
Free throws from Towson brought them within nine, but a layup from Turner gave Drexel a 47-35 lead with 12:33 on the clock. The Tigers responded with a 10-4 run before a Blakeney layup pushed the lead back up to seven with 7:50 to play. The teams went back and forth before back-to-back Tiger baskets cut the Drexel lead down to three with 5:20 left. A basket from Josh Reed and free throws from Vanderhorst pushed the lead back up to five with 4:00 minutes on the clock. A Blakeney three and a Turner and-one gave the Dragons a nine point lead with 1:55 remaining.
Free throws from Beard and Vanderhorst sealed the win for Drexel. The Dragons outrebounded the Tigers 19-13 in the second half while also shooting 50% from the field.
