Men's Basketball Wins Defensive Battle Against Campbell, 65-60

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's basketball team won a defensive battle over the Campbell Camels, 65-60, on Thursday at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Shane Blakeney led the team with 22 points. Before the game, Eli Beard, Victor Panov, Shane Blakeney and Garfield Turner were all honored for Senior Day. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker's Local 98 is once again the presenting sponsor of Drexel Men's Basketball.
BY THE NUMBERS
Blakeney was 9-17, including making his final five shots down the stretch.
Victor Panov had 13 points on the night in addition to rebounding the ball six times, serving up four assists, blocking two shots and stealing the ball twice.
Garfield Turner scored 12 points on 5-6 shooting with five rebounds, tied his career high with three assists and stole the ball once.
On the night Drexel held Campbell to 38% shooting and stole the ball seven times.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons scored first, off a Garfield Turner second-chance tip-in layup. The two teams then went back and forth, with neither team able to create separation in a tight first half. A layup from Martin de Laporterie gave Drexel an 11-8 lead with 14:40 on the clock. Campbell took the lead off of back-to-back baskets, before a Josh Reed second-chance jump shot started a 9-0 Drexel run that was capped off by a Kevon Vanderhorst layup at the 9:43 mark. The Camels chipped away at the lead, going on a 10-3 run to cut the score to one, but a jump shot from Turner extended the lead to three with 3:24 to play.
The two teams continued to go back and forth, ending the first half tied at 27. Drexel outrebounded Campbell 23-15 in the first half and limited the Camels to only two three-pointers.
The second half started with an 11-4 Dragon run off of baskets from Turner, Panov and Blakeney.
Throughout the opening minutes of the second half, both defenses dominated for stretches. A 7-0 Camel run tied things up at 38 with 10:23 to play before free throws from Turner helped Drexel retake the lead. Campbell tied things up again before a gritty Vanderhorst layup put the Dragons back in front with 9:24 to play.
The two teams continued to go back and forth, with neither able to pull away from the other. Campbell retook the lead at 6:21 but a Panov buzzer beater put Drexel back in front with 5:31 to play.
The defensive battle continued before Campbell tied things up at 57 at 1:08 left. A basket and free throws from Blakeney and Eli Beard gave the Dragons a six-point lead with eight seconds remaining before the Camels cut the lead to three. A pair of free throws from Beard sealed the win for Drexel.
The Dragons protected the ball in the second half, winning the turnover battle 6-3. Drexel shot a season high 90.9% from the free throw line on the night.
With the win, the Dragons secure their sixth straight winning season.
